Changes needed in our Education system for a better future

Being a part of education system of India for a long time, both as a student as well as a teacher now for last two years, I have come to form some strong opinions about it. I will talk about my experiences about it in detail in later articles. However right now, I would like to suggest some modifications and changes in our education system, which can help us improve as a society and species.

Meditation as a compulsory part of daily schedule

First, I would like to see meditation as a compulsory part of school education systems across the world. Scientific research on meditation has shown its positive impacts on mental and physical health, memory, intelligence and ability to cope with stress. It can also help reduce anxieties which kids develop due to parents and peer pressure to do well in studies from a very early age.

Focus on developing a questioning, scientific Mindset

Secondly, I would want teaching to move from rote learning philosophy to encouraging kids to ask questions and understanding things rather than mugging stuff up. Our education system since the beginning encourages kids to remember things and put them into the exam papers to get marks. We need to train our young teachers to encourage them to inculcate a questioning mindset in our kids and help them develop a scientific mindset from early days.

Sports as a part of school curriculum

Apart from this, I would love to see sports as a compulsory part of school education. Sports can help children in many ways, making them more competitive and helping them develop the ability of working in teams. Also, it can help us fight the obesity problem that has been raising its head worldwide because of lack of enough physical education and bad eating habits amongst kids. Apart from that, sports can also help build a good character in our youth.

We all can Contribute

We all need to take some tiny steps towards improving our society and changing our education system can be a very effective way of bringing about a positive change in our society. And everyone has to be a part of it to make it happen. Everyone on their individual capacity can at least go and talk to their schools to make some of these positive changes. We owe it to our future generations.
